Appartment and Commercial Building
The new Zollhaus consists of a continuous building volume, which is interrupted by a staggered incision along the railway line at the level of Mattengasse. This firstly formulates a raised head-end facing Langstrasse and secondly “invites” the public space above the cascade into the building, while also creating a spatial reference to the quarter. The compact form allows the development of a square on the station side. Two projections – one at the eastern and one at the western end of the building – mark the entrances to the public programmes inside and provide a covered space below. The terraced area forms the heart of the cooperative concept and is a green oasis in the inner-urban space. The street area of Zollstrasse enters into the building on several levels, continuing there as a rue intérieure, where it accommodates semi-private elements such as post-boxes and a laundry. Various new housing typologies sound out the possibilities of long-term, transformable cooperative uses.
